  • Staten Island was founded in 1524 by Giovanni da Verrazzano.

  • Staten Island got its name after the Dutch purchased the island from the Munsee tribe in 1630. They named it after the Staten-Generaal, the legislature that serves as the highest governing body in their home country.
  • Staten Island has a population of about 500,000 – the least populated borough in NYC. 
  • The Island is shaped like a triangle and is 13.9 miles long and 7.3 miles wide, a total of 60.9 square miles, the third largest borough.

  • Staten Island is the home of the oldest continuously inhabited free black community in the United States called Sandy Ground. The Sandy Ground Historical Society runs a museum in the community’s honor.
